The LGBTQ+ pride flag was raised during a short ceremony in front of Hawkesbury Town Hall at noon on Thursday, June 11.

Mayor Robert Lefebvre and Councillor Jeanne Charlebois were joined by representatives of the LGBTQ+ community for the event. June is recognized as Pride Month around the world and in many local communities.

Lefebvre said it is important to respect and recognize diversity and demonstrate that Hawkesbury is a diverse, inclusive community.

“It’s essentially a symbol of inclusivity and diversity,” Lefebvre said about the flag raising.

“We have to respect various communities that are part of our community,” he emphasized.

Lefebvre added that there must be an emphasis on ensuring Hawkesbury is a safe place for everyone.

“We don’t want discrimination, and we want them to feel safe in the community.”

Members of the Hawkesbury Fire Department, municipal employees, and a few citizens also attended the LGBTQ+ flag raising.

There are four flag poles of equal height in front of Hawkesbury Town Hall. The pride flag is flying on the same pole as the municipal flag. The Canada, Ontario, and Franco-Ontarian, flags fly on each of the other flag poles.
