Brownsburg-Chatham town council met on Tuesday, June 2 and the agenda included several decisions involving property, parks, and public safety.

Common front on 50

Council adopted a motion endorsing a continued common front among municipalities along Autoroute 50 requesting more immediate security and safety measures from the Québec government involving the highway. The mostly two-lane, undivided road has seen many collisions and loss of life, and the municipalities believe the configuration of the road is the main contributing factor. The municipalities are demanding a clear action plan from the provincial government.

Work is gradually taking place to install a barrier between the lanes on the two-lane sections of Autoroute 50 and a multi-year project to fully twin the highway between Mirabel and Gatineau is also making gradual progress.

Buying building

The town of Brownsburg-Chatham is acquiring a building in the centre of Brownsburg. The town will purchase 207 rue Principale, which is a historic former church that has been most recently used as office space for businesses, at a cost of $750,000.

“The acquisition of the building is strategic from a downtown development perspective,” Director-General Jean-François Brunet told The Review.

Brunet said the rear portion of the property was essential for the town to carry out a potential project on the lots located nearby on rue des Érables.

“As for the building itself, we will consider its future use in the coming months. We already have some interest in it,” Brunet said.

Park project

Council has approved spending up to $1,200,000 on the development of the new Parc de l’Heritage Cushing. Mayor Kévin Maurice explained that the waterfront park on the Ottawa River will be adjacent to a new residential area around Cushing.

Roof renos

Council has awarded a contract for $190,614 for roof renovations at the building where the municipal garage and offices for the Department of Infrastructure and Public Works is located. The town received three offers from contractors, and the contract was awarded to Toitures 3 Étoiles of Montréal.

Dam design

Brownsburg-Chatham council has awarded the engineering contract to Cima + for the preparation of plans and specifications related to dam in Brownsburg located on Rivière de l’Ouest.

The dam provides a reservoir for a source of potable water and fire protection for both the Orica explosives plant, and for the municipal water system.

Mayor Kévin Maurice described the unusual situation of the Orica-owned dam also acting as a reservoir for municipal water.
