The Mayor of Saint-André-d ’Argenteuil is reminding residents to keep their criticisms of council and the municipal government on a respectable level.
On Thursday, May 28, Stephen Matthews posted a social media message telling citizens to watch their language when expressing objections or opinions to decisions made by council and towards municipal staff.
“We wish to remind you that the municipal team and council members work diligently and with integrity every day, respecting the laws and code of ethics that govern their duties. Decisions are always made in the collective interest, in accordance with established democratic processes, including public notices, consultations, and votes,” Matthews wrote.
He said that in a democracy, everyone has the right to express themselves, but that this right comes with responsibilities.
“Defamatory remarks, unfounded accusations, and the use of insulting or violent language, in any form, are unacceptable and may constitute offences under applicable laws regarding defamation and respect for persons,” cautioned Matthews.
He did not specify the source of the comments or the issues they were associated with, but Matthews did write that comments have been made which are disrespectful and crossed the boundaries of acceptable behaviour.
“This behaviour seriously undermines the climate of dialogue and the ability to exchange ideas constructively on issues affecting our municipality,” he remarked.
Matthews urged all residents to demonstrate respect and civic mindedness in their communications, and said official channels for consultation and expression are in place to allow everyone to voice their opinion appropriately and openly.
