Due to an increase in the circulation of measles throughout Québec and possible exposure in the Laurentides region, the public health department of the CISSS des Laurentides health authority is requesting the population to remain vigilant and to follow recommendations to limit the transmission of the disease and protect the most vulnerable.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that can cause serious complications, particularly in children under one year of age, pregnant women and people with a weakened immune system. It is possible to be infected and catch the disease without having been in direct contact with a person suffering from measles. Indeed, it may be enough to have been in the same room as a contagious person, even for a short time.

Vaccination remains the most effective way to protect against measles.

In Québec, according to the regular vaccination schedule, children receive the measles vaccine at 12 and 18 months. However, vaccination is offered free of charge to anyone born after 1970 who has not never received the measles vaccine or who has never had this disease. People born before 1970 are considered protected against measles. For those who wish to check their vaccination status and have more information, consult Québec.ca/rougeole or to call 1 877 644-4545.

Making an appointment to get the measles vaccine is available online on Clic Santé https://portal3.clicsante.ca/ , by telephone at 1 877 644-4545, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Preventive measures to limit the transmission of measles

As a precautionary measure, monitor the appearance of the following symptoms: fever, nasal congestion with runny nose, cough, conjunctivitis (red, runny eyes), sensitive eyes, and general discomfort. Subsequently, redness appears on the face and then on the body.

In the event of symptoms, the public health department reminds that it is important to isolate yourself and avoid contact with other people. Washing your hands regularly can help reduce the spread of the measles virus.

If travel for a medical consultation is necessary, it is strongly recommended to:

 Wear a mask;

 Avoid using public transportation;

 Contact the medical clinic or any other care and service environment before traveling to inform staff of yours or someone else’s condition. If this is not possible, upon arrival, inform the reception staff.
