Québec Minister of Health and Social Services, Christian Dubé, expressed concern on Friday about projections regarding the risks of hospitalization for people diagnosed with COVID-19, as well as projections of the number of hospitalizations and bed occupancy.
The general trend for the number of new hospitalizations is increasing for all of Québec. If the transmission rate remains constant, projections suggest that the number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients will approach hospital capacities over the next four weeks. For the government and health authorities, the situation is particularly worrying for the greater Montréal area. These capacities refer to the targets of reserved beds for patients with COVID-19 in the various health and social services establishments in Québec.
The profile of hospitalized cases is changing. While the proportion of elderly people being hospitalized with COVID-19 is decreasing, authorities are seeing an increase of hospitalized patients who already have other chronic conditions.
