Visitors to Confederation Park on Le Chenail Island in Hawkesbury this spring and summer have likely noticed that new banks of rough stone now encircle the shoreline. The work was done in recent months to stop the erosion of the island into the Ottawa River.
At the Hawkesbury Town Council meeting on Monday, June 22, Councillor Jeanne Charlebois remarked that people had commented to her about the rocky shoreline the island now has. She asked if the work has been completed or if there is a second phase still to be done.
Chief Administrative Officer Sam Cardarelli said some topsoil work remains to be done, but the main aspects of the project are complete. He said the work was needed because of significant erosion on the island, which was losing several feet of shoreline each year. Cardarelli said any future work would depend on implementation of other plans for Confederation and Cyr de Lasalle parks. He emphasized the first phase was really to save the island.
Also, Councillors Julie Séguin and Yves Paquette expressed concerns over parking at Confederation Park with not enough spaces, recreational vehicles, and traffic being blocked.
