RE: We do not tell you what to think (last week’s editorial)
I’m glad you print local news and commentary in The Review.
Week after week, I learn about the local fund-raising, fun-times, and challenges that enliven my community. I am re-assured that we are good people who care about each other.
This, despite bleak news from science and mainstream media of aggressive harm to ecosystems and ‘othered’ people everywhere. Even our provincial and federal governments accrue power for their priority projects, at the expense of local authority and regulated environmental protection.
The Review reminds me that communities that work together on something feel good about each other. Public opinion polls tell us the vast majority of Canadians care deeply about nature, endangered species, and climate change… but feel alone in their concern. Please don’t succumb to loneliness. Know that others are also worried and want to talk. Know that small grants are available to support local events and new ideas. Know that our Canada/US view of the world is limited; many other countries are working out how to replace their fossil fuel economies with more distributed energy systems powered by renewables. We too will make this transition and change. As we do, local news about our relationships and community organizations will build trust and our confidence in a future of well-being.
