The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) has secured additional funding from the Ministry of Education to support the expansion of Cambridge Public School, ensuring the project continues to move forward.
With an additional $3,966,889 in Capital Priorities funding from the Ministry of Education, along with $2,956,263 from UCDSB’s School Renewal and School Condition Improvement funds, the project now represents a total investment of $18.2 million in public education.
This new funding will help address unique site-related costs associated with the project, including upgrades to the existing building and the relocation of site-based components.
Construction is scheduled to begin in May, with some initial site preparation already underway.
“Our goal is clear: to provide students with opportunities to succeed and grow, while ensuring teachers have the resources and environment, they need to inspire learning and help students thrive,” said Paul Calandra, Minister of Education. “We will continue investing in safe, modern schools while strengthening accountability and transparency across Ontario’s education system to ensure every dollar prepares students with practical skills for good-paying, stable careers.”
“This additional investment in the Cambridge Public School expansion is great news for students, families, and the entire community. It will help ensure the project moves forward and continues to meet the needs of a growing population,” said Stéphane Sarrazin, MPP for Glengarry–Prescott–Russell. “Our government remains committed to investing in modern, high-quality learning environments that support student success.”
The expansion will add 427 pupil spaces, increasing the school’s total capacity to approximately 686 students. Currently, Cambridge Public School has about 535 students enrolled, with 14 portable classrooms in use.
As part of the project, the parking area, bus lanes, and student drop-off zones will also be upgraded and reconfigured.
“Cambridge Public School serves a rapidly growing community, and this expansion is greatly needed,” said UCDSB Trustee Corina Parisien. “We are grateful to the Minister of Education for approving these additional funds, and to MPP Stéphane Sarrazin for his continued support. I’m excited to see this project progress, and I know families in the community share that excitement for this new learning space.”
A sod-turning ceremony to mark the construction milestone is being planned for later this year. The school addition is expected to open in September 2028.
