The City of Cornwall and the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SDG) will provide one-time funding in 2026 to support local food banks and food programs responding to rising food insecurity, housing instability and affordability challenges.
The funding, fully provided by the province through the Housing Prevention Program, totals $79,307. It will be distributed to front-line community organizations that assist individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
One of the recipients of the funding is the St. Vincent de Paul Society in Alexandria. It will receive more than $15,000.
“Food insecurity is a growing concern in our community, and many local organizations are seeing unprecedented demand for their services,” said Cornwall Mayor Justin Towndale. “This one-time funding recognizes the critical role these organizations play and helps ensure they can continue providing essential support to those who need it most.”
“This initiative reflects the shared responsibility of municipalities to support residents facing financial hardship,” said SDG Warden Francois Landry. “By working with community partners, we are delivering timely support to organizations addressing food insecurity across the region.”
Funding recipients must submit receipts and reports in accordance with program guidelines to ensure accountability and transparency.
