Even though Québec’s Construction Holiday is over and it is now midsummer, weekend traffic continues to be heavy on the Long Sault Bridge connecting Hawkesbury with Grenville.
As the only fixed-link crossing of the Ottawa River between Montréal and Ottawa, the bridge is a popular route for people traveling to the Laurentides and Outaouais regions for weekends or weeks at chalets, campsites, or on lakes and rivers. Additionally, the route sees heavy local traffic each day because of commuters and commercial travel. Traffic across the bridge from Hawkesbury to Grenville was very slow on Friday, August 8. Between 4 and 6 pm, it took up to 30 minutes to drive from Le Chenail Boulevard in Hawkesbury to rue Principale in Grenville, a distance of only 1.5 kilometres.
