Community members and friends of the late Amanda Maloney in the Moose Creek and Maxville area want something done about dangerous driving conditions on Highway 138.

Maloney, who owned the Swiss Farmer Bakery in the area, died on March 29 as the result of a collision on Highway 138. The busy road connecting Highway 417 to Cornwall has been the scene of many serious and fatal collisions in recent years.

Following Maloney’s death, a petition was organized, requesting the Ministry of Transportation and Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) Nolan Quinn to take action to make the highway safer.

Maloney’s friends and neighbours have organized a town hall meeting about Highway 138, which will take place on Saturday, June 21 at 10 am at the Moose Creek Hall. Project Amanda; Not just a road improvement project, is intended to convince officials that significant changes are needed to Highway 138 because of the deaths and serious injuries that have resulted from collisions along the road.

“Residents are sick of the deaths and life altering injuries,” said Matt Shea, one of the organizers.

Cara Sabourin, another of the Project Amanda organizers, said Maloney’s family are supportive of the initiative.

North Stormont Mayor François Landry, South Stormont Mayor Brian McGillis, North Glengarry Mayor Jamie MacDonald, United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SDG) Warden Martin Lang, SDG Chief Administrative Officer Maureen Adams, and Cornwall City Councillor Sarah Good have agreed to participate on the panel for the meeting on June 21.

Meeting organizers have also invited Premier Doug Ford, Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Singh Sarkaria, MPP Nolan Quinn, and representatives of the Ministry of Transportation and Ontario Provincial Police (OPP).

The Moose Creek Hall is located at 1 Munroe Street in Moose Creek.
