A motion recently adopted by Champlain Township council about heavy vehicle traffic and heavy vehicle driver licensing has received support from at least two other local municipalities.
The motion, originally moved by Champlain Township Councillor Gerry Miner and seconded by Councillor Paul Burroughs on April 24, requested the Government of Ontario to increase surveillance and spot checks of all heavy vehicles travelling on Ontario roads as well as monitoring the testing standards maintained by privately-owned heavy licensing facilities. The Champlain resolution was also forwarded to the Minister of Transportation, the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, the MPP Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, theOntario Provincial Police (OPP), The Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO), and all municipalities in Ontario.
On May 12, Hawkesbury town council adopted a resolution in support of the Champlain resolution. Heavy trucks traveling on unauthorized streets through town have been a concern in recent months. This has led to the installation of more signage indicating where heavy trucks are permitted and an expression by council for municipalities to be able to better enforce unauthorized vehicle traffic.
Earlier in May, Alfred and Plantagenet township council also adopted a resolution in support of the Champlain resolution.
