On the afternoon of December 9, the new 36-unit Laurentien apartment building was inaugurated in the Village of Grenville. The building was named to commemorate the former Cinéma Laurentien which operated at the location until 2023.

Members of the project company UNIVA, government officials from the Village of Grenville, and the Mayor of Grenville, Pierre Thauvette, were on hand for the ceremony.

“This is an ideal location close to schools and services and the project fits perfectly into our harmonious and sustainable development” in the region, Thauvette said.

Le Laurentien houses 36 rental units at a monthly cost of $1,475. Each unit includes five appliances, storage space, an air conditioner, one outdoor parking space, and a large 17 by eight-foot balcony, among other amenities. All units are currently rented and the building is at capacity.

The apartment building is a welcome addition as the population of the village increased by 32 per cent over the past 15 years. UNIVA is also constructing two new apartment buildings on 1e Avenue in Grenville, which will include 40 additional units, and are expected to open in the fall of 2025.

“The real estate project reminds us that the future of Grenville lies in our ability to evolve while respecting our past,” Thauvette stated.

Former owner of Cinéma Laurentien Danielle Lacasse shed some tears of happiness at the celebratory and commemorative event. The building was commemorated by not only sharing the location of the previous cinema but through a similar name as well.

Lacasse owned and operated Cinéma Laurentien with her late husband, Yvon Myner, until their retirement in October 2021. It was the only theatre in the region between Ottawa and Montréal and provided movie-goers entertainment for more than 70 years.
