At the October 15 Township of North Glengarry Council meeting, councillors approved the heritage designation of six Township buildings. After receiving no comments or objections from individuals in the community, the council passed new by-laws to designate three buildings in Alexandria and three in Maxville as holding cultural heritage and worthy of protection.

Under the Ontario Heritage Act, properties with two or more significant features, including contextual value, structural design, or other heritage-based importance, can receive the designation.

Maxville’s designations include the St. Elmo Presbyterian Church located at 1996 County Road 20, which was the first to receive its designation from the council. Additional designations were given to St. Elmo Congregational Church at 18191 Kenyon Concession 19, and 6 Church Street.

Alexandria’s heritage designations applied to 101 Centre Street, 53 Dominion Street, and 209-215 Main Street.

If any of the properties require repairs or alterations, they will now be subject to municipal oversight and approval. A previous report to the council on September 9 outlined the reasoning for the heritage designation of those properties. Community members had until October 11 to present arguments against the designations and voice any concerns.

The final date to appeal the new by-laws is November 14. The reasons for the objection must include the fees associated with the Tribunal. Appeals can be made to Chief Administrative Officer and Clerk Sarah Huskinson at [email protected]
