Grenville-sur-la-Rouge (GSLR) Council unanimously voted to oppose the proposed Alto high-speed rail project, calling instead for public funds to be directed toward existing municipal infrastructure. On Tuesday, September 8, council said GSLR has significant infrastructure needs related to maintenance, repair, and modernization.
The resolution cites roads, culverts, and community facilities that require major investments to ensure their longevity and residents’ safety.
Council argued that public funds should primarily be used to improve existing infrastructure and local services, saying such investment would provide more immediate benefits to residents and communities.
The municipality is asking the federal and Québec governments to reconsider their infrastructure investment priorities and redirect funds planned for the Alto project toward maintaining and modernizing existing infrastructure.
A copy of the resolution will be sent to Prime Minister Mark Carney, Québec Premier Christine Fréchette, and other relevant federal and provincial officials, as well as municipal associations.
Council approved the resolution without discussion, with councillors Patrice Deslongchamps and Daniel Gauthier absent from the meeting.
