Hazardous waste from more than 900 households in Hawkesbury, Champlain, and East Hawkesbury was brought to the annual Household Hazardous Waste Day in Hawkesbury on Saturday, October 5.
According to Recycling Coordinator Jennifer Ashfield, 772 vehicles passed through the collection area at the Hawkesbury Wastewater Treatment Plant. Student and teacher volunteers from École secondaire publique Le Sommet collected the materials from the vehicles. Household hazardous waste includes materials like paint, cleaning products, batteries, and automotive fluids. A hazardous waste management company takes the materials away for environmentally responsible disposal. The school will receive a donation in return for the volunteer service.
