A groundbreaking ceremony for the new recreation complex in the Township of Russell was held on September 17 to an excited crowd.

Those in attendance to witness the event included MPP Stéphane Sarrazin, local elected officials, stakeholders, community staff, and residents. As a long-time resident, Mayor Mike Tarnowski expressed pride and elation at the project’s official commencement.

“This complex will promote physical and mental health, bring our community together, and boost our local economy,” Tarnowski said.

Construction is now underway for the $100 million complex. One of the largest projects undertaken by the Township of Russell, the modern and accessible centre will provide a wide range of opportunities for locals.

It will feature three ice rinks to replace the two in Embrun and Russell, an aquatic centre containing year-round swimming, an embedded 10,000-square-foot community centre that can be divided into three sections for differing uses, and a community hub. The hub will include the existing recreational area and the Jonathan Pitre Accessible Park, as well as outdoor sports courts and a seniors’ exercise area.

“Today, we break ground on a facility that reflects years of collaboration and commitment, and we are excited to deliver a space that will benefit our community for generations,” Richard Godin, CAO of the Township of Russell stated.

Public consultations for the complex were originally held back in 2020. The construction project was awarded to McDonald Brothers Construction Inc. during the June 24, 2024 council meeting.
