Volunteers are asking for citizens’ preferred name for a short walking trail leading from Bay Road to Des Chalets Street on the outskirts of L’Orignal.

Clearing the unofficial 365-metre walking path to create a trail on an unopened road allowance (old Roland Road) was first suggested to Champlain Township in 2021 in a letter from the L’Orignal Chevaliers de Colomb St-Jean Baptiste Grand Knight Marcel Clément, who said that removing trees and installing a culvert were a few of the items he said could improve the trail for pedestrians. He said that the idea had gained support when he posted it on Facebook.

At the time, the township was not completely sold on the idea, as creating a municipal trail meant bringing it to certain standards and some councillors were concerned about the cost.

But a $60,000 donation from the Chevaliers de Colomb St-Jean Baptiste in 2022 provided funds for the work that needed to be done. A portion of the donation was used to complete work at the L’Orignal Beach.

According to Marcel Clément’s Facebook post, some suggested names for the trail include: Sentier des Chevaliers, Sentier Marcel Clément, Sentier Clément and Sentier des Chalets. Please visit the Familles de L’Orignal Facebook page to submit suggestions.

The trail is located in the Ivaco Rolling Mills buffer zone.
