The windstorm on the night of Wednesday, February 28 knocked the wind out of the Tim Hortons Dome in Alexandria.

The dome is home to indoor soccer fields, tennis courts, and a walking track.

According to Township of North Glengarry Chief Administrative Officer Sarah Huskinson, the township was alerted by a local resident at around 10:45pm on February 28 that the one side of the dome was deflated, and the winds were causing the remainder of the dome to rise and fall.

The entire region was hit with high winds on Wednesday night as warm temperatures suddenly plummeted below freezing.

At the dome, North Glengarry staff and Mayor Jamie MacDonald visited the site and assessed the damage. According to Huskinson, a tear in the membrane was found at the northwest corner of the dome which caused wind to come in and the inflatable building to lose pressure.  The tear was blocked and the pressure in the dome increased, allowing it to regain shape.

“We are in the process of assessing damage and a company will be coming down to fix the tear.  There was also minor damage to some lights and tension cords,” Huskinson said.

To ensure public safety, the Township of North Glengarry has closed the Tim Hortons Dome in Alexandria until further notice.
