A former Member of Parliament (MP) wants to return to the House of Commons and a Hawkesbury town councillor is attempting to make the switch to federal politics.

Julie Séguin, who was elected to Hawkesbury council in 2022, officially announced on January 22 she is seeking the Conservative Party of Canada nomination for the new Prescott-Russell riding.

More than 65 people attended Séguin’s campaign launch, held at Déjà-Vu Resto Bar in Hawkesbury.

Meanwhile, former Glengarry-Prescott-Russell MP Pierre Lemieux is also seeking the Conservative nomination. Lemieux served as the riding’s representative from 2006 to 2015.

The Conservative party has not yet set a date for its nomination meeting in Prescott-Russell.

No federal election is officially scheduled until 2025. However, as the governing Liberal party has a minority of the seats in the House of Commons, an election could be necessary if a confidence agreement for major legislation it has with the New Democratic Party is discontinued.
