Construction has started on the new community centre in St-Eugène.
The concrete footings and foundation for the new facility have been poured, and backfilling work was done at the site, which is located on the former CO-OP property on Labrosse Street/County Road 10. The Township of East Hawkesbury purchased the property for $150,000 in December of 2019.
The new community centre will be 50 feet by 80 feet and contain hall space for 125 people, as well as a kitchen and bathrooms. The old St- Eugène Community Centre was condemned.
The total project cost of the new community centre is $1,550,000. The first phase is projected to cost $850,000 and received $438,750 in federal funding from the Canada Community Revitalization Fund. The first phase is to be completed by June 30, 2023. The projected cost of the second phase is $700,000.
The Township of East Hawkesbury has also established a fundraising campaign for the new St- Eugène Community Centre, with a goal of $170,000. As of December 19, more than $41,000 had been raised.
