The Hawkesbury Regional Recycling Committee will be holding a collection event for household hazardous waste on Saturday, October 1, 2022 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hawkesbury Sewage Treatment Plant, at 815 Main Street East in Hawkesbury.

Residents from the Town of Hawkesbury, Champlain Township and the Township of East Hawkesbury can drop off items at the collection point. These three municipalities are part of the Hawkesbury Regional Recycling Committee.

What products will be accepted? Pesticides and garden products, including fertilizers and insecticides, personal care products such as nail polish remover, prescription drugs and unused over-the-counter drugs and automotive and garage products (antifreeze, batteries and battery acid, brake fluid, car wax, windshield washer fluid) and paints and solvents, in addition to household cleaning products and miscellaneous products like air fresheners and dry cell batteries, lighters, propane canisters and swimming pool chemicals are just some of the items which will be accepted at the collection day.

Last year the gross cost for one event (all inclusive) was $94,115 with grants amounting to $32,621 for a total net cost of $61,494 and about 60 tonnes of waste material was collected.

Citizens are relied upon to store items which qualify as household hazardous waste and bring them to collection events like this one, which were taking place two times per year (once in May and once in October). This year’s May event was cancelled.

Note that proof of residence will be required. Items should be in the trunk of your vehicle or in the truck bed and not inside your vehicle. The collection day is set up somewhat like a drive-through; residents check in, then drive to where workers are waiting to remove items from your vehicle before you drive out.
