To our knowledge at The Review, Betty White never visited Prescott and Russell, North Glengarry, or Argenteuil. But she shared one thing in common with many people in our communities: a deep love and concern for animals.

White was best known for her long television acting career, as the airheaded but loveable Rose Nylund on The Golden Girls and man-hungry Happy Homemaker Sue-Ann Nivens on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. She passed away in her sleep on December 31 at age 99. Her 100th birthday would have been on January 17.

Since White’s death, messages have begun to circulate on social media challenging people to donate a minimum of five dollars to the animal welfare organization of their choice on January 17 to honour her memory and love for pets. The Review received a suggestion we invite area residents to make donations, and we like kittens and puppies as much as anyone else, so here’s a list of local organizations assisting cats, dogs, and other pets.
