Ottawa man arrested for driving the wrong way on Autoroute 50 in Lachute

At around 2:30 a.m. on May 28, MRC d’Argenteuil Sûreté du Québec officers received a tip from a citizen that there was a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction on Autoroute 50 westbound, near km 260, in Lachute. Officers stopped the oncoming vehicle on the Autoroute 50/avenue Bethany ramp.

After routine checks, police arrested the driver, a 33-year-old man from Ottawa. The suspect was taken to the SQ station where a drug recognition assessor gave the suspect a series of tests and was subsequently released on warning. After the intervention, the suspect assaulted the police at the scene. The suspect was taken to the hospital for medical attention.

The suspect will appear in court in Saint-Jérôme at a later date and could face charges of driving with impaired capacities by drugs, assault with a weapon on a police officer, uttering threats, obstruction and mischief.

The suspect will also receive fines totaling $ 3,597 and three demerit points for having committed an action likely to endanger life, not wearing a seat belt, for wearing headphones while driving and in connection with the COVID-19-related ban on Ontario residents being in Québec for non-essential reasons.
