UCFO encourages agriculture and agri-food scholarship applications

The deadline is fast approaching for francophone students and entrepreneurs to apply for scholarships and funding related to studies or businesses related to agriculture and agri-food.

The Union des cultivateurs franco-ontariens (UCFO) is accepting applications to its Fonds de la relève agricole, which is a partnership between the UCFO and the Fondation franco-ontarienne.  Those interested have until August 15 at 5 p.m. to submit their application.

The objective of the Fonds de la relève agricole scholarship program is to encourage business succession among French-speaking companies in the agriculture and agri-food sector in Ontario. Scholarships, valued at $500, are available to students aged between 16 and 25 enrolled in an eligible field related to agriculture. Business project grants, valued at $ 6,000, support the initiatives of young agricultural entrepreneurs.

The UCFO was founded in 1929. With the mission to represent and defend the interests of Franco-Ontarian farmers and producers. The Fonds de la relève agricole was established in 2006 due to the efforts of then UCFO President, Pierre Bercier.

UCFO Director-General, Danik Lafond said that the fund has assisted the next generation of farmers financially and supported the start-up of many business projects  Lafond also noted that the COVID-19 crisis has placed new emphasis on food sovereignty and that people who decide to work in agriculture or agri-food deserve support.

The Fonds de la relève agricole is one of more than 50 endowment funds managed by the Fondation franco-ontarienne.

UCFO will be announcing the scholarship and grant recipients once the decision-making process is complete.
