To The Editor,

I can’t remember the last time I was seriously ill and it’s been years since I’ve dealt with anything beyond a mild head cold. I must confess to a certain feeling of invincibility, especially living in a rural area where people are relatively few and far between. It can’t happen here.

My son, who lives in Quebec, calls from time to time to check up on my wife and me. In his last call, he mentioned that a fellow he worked with before the lay-offs recently lost a brother to the virus. To suddenly “know someone who knows someone” is like the boom from a distant cannon, warning against complacency.

Not so invincible today, but more mindful of keeping my guard up. Keep safe.
