Steve Morin thinks that all Canadians should serve in the military. He joined the Canadian Air Force when he was 17 years old and traveled the world working as an airframe technician.

It was his job to repair every part of the plane, with the exception of the engines. He worked on all matter of aircraft, including his time in Vancouver where he was tasked with repairing the 442 search and rescue aircraft.

“There’s no better feeling that fixing airplanes that go out and save lives,” said Morin.

When he was stationed at the 412 VIP Squadron, in Ottawa, which has since closed, Morin was tasked with working on aircraft that shuttled a long list of VIPs that included everyone from heads of state and military leaders to British royalty.

“I did 20 years in the military. I was very lucky. I was never sent to a wartime scenario and was fortunate to be involved in a number exercises leading up to conflict,” said Morin, who finished his career in Cold Lake, where he was working on the F-18s.

After retiring from the military, Morin went to work at Bombardier where he spent an additional 17 years building planes.

“I have no regrets. I think everyone should join the military. I don’t regret my choice and I would do it again in a heartbeat. The camaraderie you have in the military is special. It’s not something you get in civilian life,” said Morin.
