The Mayor of Casselman has indicated her opinion of the Alto proposal is evolving.

Geneviève Lajoie has previously indicated her support for the high-speed passenger rail project and even said “I’m pro Alto” at a meeting of United Counties of Prescott and Russell (UCPR) Council on Friday, March 27 when potential impacts of the project upon local all-terrain vehicle and snowmobile trails was being discussed.

However, later in the same meeting when council was discussing a motion adopted by the Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus opposing the Alto project in its current form, Lajoie said her original position requires reconsideration.

“I was very much in favour of it for all of its benefits and realized that I need to do a lot more work in understanding the impacts on potential groups and other people,” Lajoie said.

She said she will be meeting with the community in Casselman to get their opinions about the project. She said it will help her be a better representative and form a strong opinion based on the community’s needs.

Lajoie encouraged other mayors to talk with her and work together.
