A bad smell recently raised a stink with shoppers and staff at the Super C supermarket in Lachute, but it did not endanger public health.
Many customers of the store, located at the Carrefour d’Argenteuil mall, complained on social media of a terrible smell in the store, and some said it was so bad they had to stop doing their shopping and leave. Others observed shoppers and employees pulling sweaters up over their noses to reduce the unpleasant stench.
Super C is a division of Metro. According to Metro Communication Manager Geneviève Grégoire, the corporate office was advised of the odour in the store on Thursday, September 5. Very quickly, a team was in place at the store to determine the source. Grégoire said the source of the smell was identified but did not say exactly what it was. She explained that numerous tests and analysis were done to protect the health and safety of employees and customers.
Grégoire said Metro is working to eliminate the smell in the supermarket as quickly as possible.
The CISSS des Laurentides regional health authority, which is responsible for public health, determined the smell at the grocery store did not constitute a risk to public health.
