The family of a L’Orignal man say he was a victim of a hit and run collision while cycling on Sunday, June 16. The man remains in Ottawa Civic Hospital with serious injuries.
According to a social media post by Nicole Dodd, her father Walter Carbonare was hit by a car at around 4 pm that afternoon while cycling on County Road 24/Front Road West, near the intersection with County Road 4 where the Ultramar and Tim Hortons are located.
The social media post explains that the driver got out of his vehicle, helped Walter off the ground, observed there was no damage to the vehicle, apologized to Walter, and then left.
“He said ‘I’m sorry’ and left,” remarked Walter’s wife, Evelyn Carbonare.
She said that Walter, clearly in shock, pedaled home.
“His two fingers were down to the bone,” she said.
She took him to the hospital in Hawkesbury and was then transferred to the trauma centre in Ottawa. Walter has five broken ribs, a collapsed lung, a tube into his chest, and is on oxygen as a result of his injuries.
The family has spoken with witnesses who saw the collision from the nearby gas station. They described the driver as a bald male in a small, white SUV. No witnesses saw the licence plate on the vehicle.
The collision has been quite upsetting to the family.
“He does a lot of cycling normally,” Evelyn said.
The family is asking for anyone with information about the collision to contact the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Hawkesbury.
