The public consultation process is underway involving the possible enlargement of a privately owned and operated landfill site near Hawkesbury.

Mayer Waste Management (Mayer Eco Solutions Inc.) has initiated an environmental assessment (EA) under the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act to increase the total approved capacity at the Mayer Waste Disposal Site 650,000 cubic metres.

The Mayer site is located in Champlain Township east of Hawkesbury, with vehicle access from County Road 17.

The proposed increase would not change the approved type or annual volume of waste currently accepted at the site and will allow Mayer Waste Management to continue to receive solid non-hazardous domestic and industrial waste and provide cost-effective and environmentally sound waste disposal to local customers. The EA assessed the potential effects of the proposed landfill expansion on the environment and surrounding community to ensure it can be safely developed.

As part of the EA process, the public is invited to review the Draft EA Report before the EA Report is finalized and formally submitted to the Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks for approval.

Between Friday October 16 and Friday November 27, the Draft EA Report and a summary of the Draft EA Report is available in both English and French online at www.mayerexpansionea.com. The Draft EA Report and summary is available for consultation in in-person at the Mayer Waste Management Office at 194 County Road 17 from Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, and at the Hawkesbury Public Library, located at 550 Higginson Street in Hawkesbury from 9 am to 6 pm on Monday and Tuesday, 9 am to 7 pm on Wednesday and Thursday, 9 am to 4 pm on Friday, and from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday.

The Draft EA Report describes the existing landfill operations, the proposed expansion project, how impacts of the proposed expansion will be managed, and commitments to future monitoring and approvals.
