Deborah Hendrix has withdrawn from the race for mayor in Alfred and Planagenet. In a press release issued on Monday, September 15, Hendrix cited personal reasons for her decision to suspend her campaign.
Due to the withdrawal deadline being past, Hendrix’s name will still appear on the ballot in the October 26 election.
Hendrix is now endorsing candidate Antoni Viau for mayor. She said that she and Viau share much of the same vision for the township’s future, and with three names on the ballot, she did not want to risk dividing support for the kind of change they both believe Alfred-Plantagenet needs.
“I want to recognize every candidate putting their name forward in this election,” said Hendrix. “The number of people stepping up is itself a sign of how much change residents want to see.” Hendrix is encouraging her supporters to instead vote for Viau.
“I want to sincerely thank everyone who supported my nomination and placed their confidence in me. It has meant more to me than I can say,” said Hendrix. “I remain deeply committed to this community and to the people who call it home. Stepping back from this campaign doesn’t change that.”
Hendrix also recognized Ian Walker (Ward 2) for his continuous stewardship of the community, offering her ongoing support for his re-election as Councillor.
Viau, and incumbent Mayor Yves Laviolette remain as the two candidates for Mayor in Alfred and Plantagenet.
