Lawrence St-Denis has donated $26,502.55 in publicly traded securities to the Hôpital Glengarry Memorial Hospital (HGMH) Foundation’s CT Scanner Campaign.

His gift advances the Foundation’s $3.5-million campaign to bring the first on-site CT scanner to HGMH. This essential technology will help HGMH’s care teams diagnose patients sooner and reduce the stress, time and travel that families currently face when CT imaging is needed.

“It’s good to have a CT Scanner close by,” said St-Denis. “The hospital has been here for my family. This is why I choose to support it.”

As a local dairy farmer, St-Denis is part of a long tradition of agricultural families supporting the services and organizations that keep rural communities strong. His gift also demonstrates one of the many ways donors can turn their generosity into better care for their neighbours.

For donors who hold appreciated publicly traded stocks or mutual funds, giving securities directly to a registered charity can be a simple and tax-efficient way to make a meaningful contribution. Rather than selling the investment and donating the proceeds, the donor transfers the securities directly to the charity.

The charity receives the full value of the gift, while the donor may benefit from a zero capital-gains inclusion rate on eligible securities and receive a charitable tax receipt based on the fair market value at the time of the donation. This approach can help donors maximize the impact of their gift and direct more of their investment toward the cause they care about.

“Lawrence’s gift began with gratitude for the care his own family has received, but its impact will be felt by families across our entire community,” said Mark Adam, Chair of the HGMH Foundation Board of Directors.

“His generosity brings us closer to having an onsite CT scanner here at home, where our neighbours can get the answers they need sooner and avoid the added stress of travelling elsewhere for care.”

“There is no single way to make a difference especially for our beloved local hospital. Donors can give securities, make a monthly donation, arrange a multi-year pledge, leave a gift in their will or contribute through Business Steps Up. Every gift reflects a shared belief that the people we care about deserve outstanding healthcare close to home. It is this generosity, offered in so many different ways, that has always kept HGMH strong.”

The Foundation hopes St-Denis’s example will encourage individuals, families and business owners to explore the giving option that works best for them. Donors considering a gift of securities are encouraged to consult their financial or tax advisor.
