Occasional rain meant fewer vendors and shoppers at this year’s Trash ‘n’ Treasure in Vankleek Hill on Saturday, June 6. But the annual town-wide yard sale was still a successful, fun day of buying and selling for residents and visitors.

Trash ‘n’ Treasure is presented by the Vankleek Hill Business and Merchant Association with the support of Champlain Township.

“The weather forecast had people concerned and indeed, some of the out-of-town vendors canceled early Saturday morning, but mostly everybody that came had a great day,” said Trash ‘n’ Treasure organizer Louise Sproule.

There were still a lot of people in town said Sproule, but the exact number is difficult to gauge because there was no way of counting. Sproule noted that many people who were selling had sold out of all of their items.

Many outdoor sales continued under portable canopies or in garages. Church basements were convenient, dry places for indoor fundraising yard sales. At The Review office, there was a steady stream of shoppers at The Play’s The Thing sale, which sold games, toys, and music items as a fundraiser for High and Main Productions.

A Google event map was created for the first time for this year’s Trash ‘n’ Treasure so yard sale locations around Vankleek Hill could be posted on that map for bargain hunters to find and plan their shopping.

“We thank everybody for turning out and people enjoyed their day in Vankleek Hill,” Sproule remarked.

For the entire weekend of Saturday June 6 and Sunday June 7, the requirement for municipal yard sale permits was removed for all residents of Champlain Township.
