The Vankleek Hill and District Nature Society welcomed Lynn Ovenden, a Casselman resident, as their guest speaker on Monday, April 20 at the VCI Library.

The topic, Recycling and Waste, was not only very current but apropos as it occurred during the same week as Earth Day on Wednesday, April 22.

Ovenden, a new member of the VKHDNS, is also a member of the Ottawa Field Naturalist Club, Eco East, Field Botanists of Ontario, a few mushroom clubs, Friends of Dumoine, and the RA Canoe and Camping Club.

She has been involved with environmental issues since she was a teen in the 1960’s. Ovenden studied Biology at the University of Toronto and did Graduate and Post-Doctoral work on Northern Peatlands and Organic Sediment.

On April 22, Ovenden discussed many aspects of recycling and waste such as the new provincial regulations for the Blue Box Program, which took effect on January 1, 2026. She also touched on where the recyclables are supposed to end up, what can or cannot be recycled, and, most importantly, a local “Where to Recycle Map.” The presentation included ideas for action locally.
