Students at Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute (VCI) had a unique opportunity to explore future career pathways as the Skills Ontario Trades & Tech Truck visited the school from April 8 to 10. The interactive mobile classroom welcomed all VCI students, with a special focus on those enrolled in technology courses such as woodshop and auto mechanics.
Earlier in February, Grade 7 and 8 students from Pleasant Corners Public School (PCPS) were also invited to attend, giving younger students an early introduction to the skilled trades and technologies.
The Trades & Tech Truck offers a wide range of hands-on activities designed to give students a real feel for different careers. Stations included hairstyling, air brush painting, cake decorating, tire changing, and electrical work. Students could also test their knowledge at a trivia station focused on different trades.
One of the most popular features was the use of virtual reality, where students could experience what it’s like to work in various trades. A highlight for many was the forklift simulator, which allowed participants to try driving a forklift in a safe, virtual environment.
The experience was led by Trades & Tech Truck Program Facilitator Victoria Clifford and driver Mitch Villeneuve. Both played an important role in guiding students through the activities, answering questions, and sharing information about potential career paths. They also provided informational materials for students interested in pursuing careers in the skilled trades.
Overall, the visit was an engaging and informative experience that gave students a better understanding of the wide range of opportunities available in the trades. Events like this help students explore their interests and consider future career options in a hands-on and interactive way.
