On Monday, April 13, North Glengarry Council unanimously endorsed the Eastern Ontario Wardens’ Caucus (EOWC) resolution opposing the Alto high-speed rail project in its current form.

The EOWC resolution expresses opposition to the Alto project as currently designed. Concerns raised include rural benefits, impacts on agricultural land, municipal infrastructure, and the consultation process.

The position of the EOWC does not oppose high-speed rail outright, but calls for adjustments to better address the needs and interests of Eastern Ontario communities.

The resolution highlights concerns regarding an insufficient consultation process, unclear impacts on rural areas, effects on agricultural land and municipal infrastructure, and alignment with regional planning priorities. It also calls for the federal government and Alto to coordinate with VIA Rail and to engage regional municipal partners.

By supporting the EOWC stance, North Glengarry joins other municipalities in the region in advocating for a coordinated approach that ensures local considerations are properly addressed in future planning and consultation for the proposed Toronto-to-Québec City corridor project.
