Hawkesbury town council is supportive of a plan to establish a new position within the municipal Finance Department.

On Monday, May 12, council received a report from Treasurer Philippe Timbers requesting the addition of a new position of Tax Coordinator.

The report outlines that several major changes have affected the operations of the Finance Department  for more than 20 years and the department has operated with the same organizational structure during that time. The report explained that to meet the demands of the financial sector and optimize operations and the town’s finances, the structure of the department needs to evolve.

“There have been many changes in finance in recent years,” Timbers said.

The report indicates public sector accounting practices, provincial asset management regulations, and the addition of water meters have greatly increased the amount of work municipal finance departments are required to do.

The new position will have no impact on the municipal budget because it will be funded through a retirement involving another position which is being discontinued.

Timbers said the new position is an idea that has been around for many years.

Councillor Tony Tsourounakis said it the new position will offer more value for the same amount of money.
