On Thursday, March 27, Champlain council unanimously approved plans for an addition and structural consolidation of the St. Andrew’s United Church heritage building located at 1008 King Street, L’Orignal.

The church was originally designated as a heritage building on October 2, 1984, and is recognized for its cultural heritage value and interest. Although the building requires repairs, its integrity remains highly valued due to its well-preserved original finishes and materials.

The building has been vacant for more than 30 years. It sits across from the old courthouse and next to the old manse on the east side. The tower at the front formerly belonged to the now-demolished convent in Vankleek Hill and was not included in the original design. The current owner took pieces of a former Roman Catholic convent and attached them to the church.

A report to council explained that the owner had long faced the challenge of preserving and restoring the historical site, attempting to strike a balance between the aesthetic qualities of the building with modern functionality.

The proposal outlined some key benefits of allowing the addition to the north exterior stone wall. These included preserving the existing heritage building for future generations, allowing for the replacement of needed electrical, heating, and ventilation systems, as well as increasing the safety of visitors.

The project includes plans for an art gallery, space for art exhibitions, additional parking, and new trees to enhance the grounds.

The project is expected to enhance the region’s historical significance and attract private investment. Additionally, the proposed addition will be constructed at the rear of the building, away from the street, preserving the visual prominence of the existing building’s architectural features.

There are no financial implications to the township, as the applicant will pay for the building permit fee.

Council approved the project with Councillors Paul Burroughs and André Roy absent. No start date for the project has been determined at this time.
