Dear Editor,

It is one of the oldest tricks in the political book. When a leader or a regime is in deep trouble, cornered, all their mistakes and gaffes finally closing in on them, they point to an external threat, real or imagined, to distract the citizens.

In Trudeau’s case, the election of Trump and a threat of possible tariffs could not have arrived at a better time. With the vast majority of Canadians, including his own party, having turned against him and wanting him out of office as soon as possible, this latest squabble with the US is exactly the life buoy he desperately needs. Even better, having been allowed to shut down parliament for the next three months (exactly why did the Governor General allow him to get away with that?), he does not have to daily face any more awkward questions about his disastrous record while in office.

Instead, Trudeau can now happily focus on generating optics and sound bites regarding possible US tariffs and how he, our knight in shining armour, will save us. The fact is that it was largely his own policies and inaction (illegal migrants, border security, defence, etc.) which annoyed Trump and the US in the first place.

It seems that Mr. Trudeau simply can not believe or accept that he is vastly disliked and distrusted on both sides of the border, that the majority of Canadians have simply tuned him out and that he is no longer the fair-haired wunderkind, adored by the cheering crowd. I guess a massive, armoured, bulletproof ego will do that for you.

Whether you prefer dealing with the tariff problem through confrontation like Premier Ford, or through compromise like Premier Smith, get this has-been Trudeau away from the bargaining table. He is an embarrassment who can only make the problem worse.

Respectfully,
