Veterans and citizens in communities across Prescott-Russell, North Glengarry, and Argenteuil gathered on Monday, November 11 and during the previous weekend to observe Remembrance Day.
A cold, November rain did not stop a sizable crowd from gathering at the cenotaph on Cartier Boulevard in Hawkesbury on Monday for the Remembrance Day ceremony organized by Royal Canadian Legion Georges Vanier Branch 472.
Veterans, Legion members, Army Cadets, and currently serving members of the Canadian Armed Forces attended and participated.
A prayer was said by Father Ikedi Obikaonu of St. Jude’s Parish in Hawkesbury and remarks were delivered by Hawkesbury Mayor Robert Lefebvre.
In Vankleek Hill on Sunday, November 10, a Remembrance Day ceremony was held that afternoon at the cenotaph on Main Street, organized by Branch 472. A colour party comprised of Legion members, Army Cadets, and veterans entered the cenotaph area. Remarks were delivered by Glengarry-Prescott-Russell Member of Parliament Francis Drouin and Champlain Township Mayor Normand Riopel. Reverend James Douglas of Knox Presbyterian Church and Monsignor Léo Villeneuve of Paroisse St-Grégoire said prayers.
That morning in L’Orignal, a Remembrance Day ceremony was held at the cenotaph at the entrance to L’Orignal Park. Also organized by Branch 472, the ceremony also included remarks by Drouin and Riopel.
On November 11, Remembrance Day ceremonies were also held at the cenotaphs in Alexandria and Lachute.
Early Remembrance Day ceremonies were held in St-Isidore on November 8 and in Maxville on November 9.
