Paving work has caused delays for traffic travelling on Highway 34 between Highway 417 and Hawkesbury during the past week. As of Monday, July 27, crews had removed the old asphalt from the highway and laid down a packed layer of recycled asphalt between Highway 417 and the southern limit of Vankleek Hill. Recycled asphalt had been partially laid down between the north limit of Vankleek Hill and the south limit of Hawkesbury as of Monday, but there were still some sections of grooved pavement where the old asphalt had been removed. Once the recycled layers are complete, new asphalt will be added on top.
Crews have been working into the evening and on Saturday to get the job completed more quickly. Drivers have had to stop and wait for several minutes while lanes are alternately closed so workers can get their job done safely.
Local chip stands have also been busier due to hungry highway workers needing lunch.
Many drivers have been taking alternate routes such as Cassburn Road and Dandy Road to avoid the slowdowns on Highway 34 between Vankleek Hill and Hawkesbury.
