Six families are without homes after a building was destroyed by fire on Route du canton (Route 148) in Brownsburg-Chatham.
Firefighters were called at 8:44 am on Monday, November 4 to the apartment building, located east of the Autoroute 50 interchange.
According to Brownsburg-Chatham Fire Chief Jason Neil, firefighters from Brownsburg-Chatham and Lachute arrived on the scene at the same time and smoke was coming from the second level of the building. The six apartments were evacuated. Firefighters from Saint-André-d’Argenteuil, Grenville, Grenville-sur-la-Rouge, and Wentworth Nord assisted.
A few cats died in the fire and none of the six families had insurance for the contents of their homes. Neil said the Red Cross is assisting the residents and all of them have found temporary accommodation.
Neil said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
