The Creating Centre in Vankleek Hill, managed by Samme Putzel, recently hosted an Open House event on Saturday, October 19. This vibrant corner of creativity welcomed neighbours to explore the building, learn about the diverse workshops and classes offered, and connect with local artists.
Stepping through the colourful main entrance, visitors were greeted by a vibrant atmosphere. Downstairs, a group of enthusiasts enjoyed a piano performance by the music teacher Alice Rodger, while others discovered the art of copper tooling, a metal embossing technique. Under the guidance of Susie Fairbrother, participants learned the secrets of raising sections of sheet metal to create relief sculptures. The Bridge Club also received people who wanted to join, play and welcomed new members.
Upstairs, the Centre serves as a refuge for creatives seeking a tranquil space to develop, store their work, and collaborate on projects. Gabrielle Charlebois, a talented artist, specializes in dried flower arrangements, watercolour house portraits, and furniture restoration. Her unique creations, infused with colour and attention to detail, have made her a cherished figure in the local community.
Susie Fairbrother, mentioned before, also a resident artist, shares her studio upstairs. Her captivating paintings, inspired by personal memories, evoke a sense of wonder and invite viewers to let their imaginations fly. Another artist and teacher, Stephanie Pete, was present, showcasing some of her paintings for everyone to admire. Pete is the owner and instructor of the Art and Dream studio in Vankleek Hill. With a Fine Arts degree from OCAD University and a passion for drawing, painting, and integrated media, Pete is also the president of the Pontiac Artists’ Association.
The Creating Centre is a gem of artistic expression, showcasing a wide range of styles and techniques. Justine Spits, for example, works with dried flowers and creates stunning prints using woodblock techniques.
Whether you’re seeking to learn a new hobby, join a creative community, or appreciate the beauty of art, the Creating Centre offers something for everyone. From role-playing games with Fernando Real to bridge, piano lessons, and writing groups, there’s always something happening.
