At the September 25 council meeting, members voted in favour of amending a local by-law that regulates traffic and parking on highways in Prescott-Russell.

To amalgamate its by-laws and facilitate the Prescott-Russell administration and better coordinate enforcement efforts, the council added new regulations for both school crossings and pedestrian crossovers.

Mayor of Clarence-Rockland Mario Zanth requested clarification on which roads would be covered under the new amendments. Prescott-Russell Public Works Director Jérémie Bouchard confirmed that the changes would apply to all county roads.

Drivers will no longer be able to park a vehicle within 30 metres of a school crossing. This includes penalizing sight obstruction where driver views are reduced or blocked, adding an increased risk of accidents involving pedestrians and other vehicles. Additionally, individuals shall not stop a vehicle within 15 metres approaching a school crossing and 10 metres following.

For pedestrian crossovers, individuals can no longer stop a vehicle within 15 metres on each approach, with 10 metres following a crossover.

The additions and changes were enacted to improve traffic safety and compliance in the counties especially surrounding school crossing and pedestrian crosswalks.
