At the October 8 council meeting, members of Grenville-sur-la-Rouge’s council unanimously agreed to submit protected area projects to the Government of Québec. The Rouge Corridor and Lac Commandant have been recommended as protected areas in the municipality.

The Government of Québec launched a program to protect public lands throughout the province by joining the new Kunming-Montréal Global Biodiversity Framework. The larger project has a flagship target to conserve 30 per cent of the planet’s lands and oceans by 2030. On June 5, the Government of Québec released a call for projects in the southern public territory to gather proposals for protected areas from stakeholders.

The municipality of Grenville-sur-la-Rouge wishes to play an active role in protecting natural and semi-natural environments within its territory by proposing the Rouge Corridor and Lac Commandant protected area projects to the Government of Québec. The Organization Éco-corridors Laurentiens identified the public lands of Grenville-sur-la-Rouge as a priority for conserving the Plaisance-Tremblant corridor.

Grenville-sur-la-Rouge council members recognized their territory must be protected because of the exceptional biodiversity that can be seen there.

The MRC of Argenteuil has been developing a regional park project on public Hydro-Québec lands in Grenville-sur-la-Rouge since 2012. Québec currently protects almost 17 per cent of its continental territory, with ecosystems south of the 49th parallel under-represented.
