The Town of Hawkesbury is proceeding with a project to replace aging traffic lights at two intersections on McGill Street, and to install a new controller for the traffic lights at another intersection.

On September 9, town council awarded the contract to Partham Engineering Limited to supply and install completely new traffic lights at the intersections of McGill Street and Spence Avenue as well as McGill Street and Bon Pasteur Street. A new controller for the existing lights will be installed at the intersection of McGill and Main streets.

The total cost of the contract is $912,732.70 plus sales tax. A total of $750,000 had been allocated in the 2024 municipal budget and earlier this summer, the Ontario government announced it will provide $672,697 to the Town of Hawkesbury for the traffic light work. As a result, the cost to the town for the project will be $240,035.70.

Director of Public Works Jonathan Wilson said the current traffic lights at the intersections of McGill and Spence, and McGill and Bon Pasteur are more than 40 years old.
