A new four-way stop intersection and an additional no parking zone are being added in L’Orignal.

On Thursday, May 23, Champlain Township council adopted a bylaw establishing a four-way stop intersection where Bonin Street, Davidson Street, and Heritage Court meet.

According to a Department of Public Works report, there were already some stop signs in the subdivision which were installed by the developer, but additional stop signs are required to control the flow of traffic properly and safely. Following what is described as a “near miss” at the intersection between a vehicle and pedestrian, the department began to investigate the need for additional stop signs on the east and/or westbound lanes of Davidson Street at the intersection.

The Department of Public Works believes that establishing the four-way stop will help safely control traffic at the intersection after the investigation into the “near miss” situation identified it is a “problem corner. Development of the subdivision is ongoing with new home construction continuing, which is also increasing vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

There were no questions or comments from council members when the report was introduced or before they adopted the bylaw.

Soon, parking will be prohibited on Victoria Street in L’Orignal near the intersection with John Street.

On May 23, Champlain Township council adopted a bylaw establishing a no parking zone on both sides of Victoria Street for 25 metres from the corner with John Street.

The Department of Public Works report recommending the establishment of the no parking zone explained how Victoria Street is used by parents to drop-off or pick-up their children from the nearby École élémentaire catholique Saint-Jean Baptiste on John Street. Parked vehicles on both sides of Victoria Street make it very difficult and hazardous for vehicles to turn onto Victoria Street from John Street or from Victoria Street onto John Street. Vehicle doors opening onto the road to let children in and out of vehicles, are creating a safety hazard for school children and reducing the street width to no more than one lane in width for oncoming traffic. An existing no parking zone which prohibits parking within five metres of any street corner is not being respected. To resolve the problem, extending the no parking zone to 25 metres was recommended.

Council members had no comments or questions when receiving the report, or before adopting the bylaw to establish the no parking zone.
