Further upgrades to the Camping Chutes-de-la-Rouge campground in Grenville-sur-la-Rouge have been cancelled due to the rising cost of the project.

Grenville-sur-la-Rouge council first planned to proceed with the expansion project at the municipal campground in 2022. At that time, the total cost was projected at $1,940,000 and subsidized by a $640,000 grant from the Québec government. The municipality was planning for park revenue, which was about $40,000 in 2020, to eventually pay off the entire cost of the project over 20 years.

Mayor Tom Arnold said the grant was originally received by the municipality in 2019 before the cost of materials and labour significantly increased during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

By cancelling the project, the municipality must also relinquish the grant back to the Québec government.

However, Arnold said the municipality plans to re-apply for grant funding so the expansion project at Camping Chutes-de-la-Rouge may again be possible.

The campground is located at the mouth of Rivière Rouge by the Ottawa River and Route 148.
