Cadets from 253 Claude Nunney VC Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron in Alexandria recently put their teamwork to the test while making new friends during the Regional Marksmanship Competition held April 12 to 14 in Trenton, Ontario.

Over the weekend, Corporal Paige Drew participated in a marksmanship competition with a team of cadets from the squadron, facing off against 140 other cadets from across Ontario.

“My favourite part of the marksmanship is no doubt the shooting,” said Drew.

“It gives me a sense of focus, so I feel very calm and collected, ready to do it.”

During marksmanship competitions, cadets use the Daisy Air Rifle which they learn how to safely handle as a part of marksmanship training at the local corps and squadrons. Proper training, supervision, and adherence to safety protocols to ensure that marksmanship activities remain safe for all participants.

Flight Corporal Reese Drew, one of Corporal Drew’s teammates, joined cadets three years ago and being able to participate in marksmanship is just one of many opportunities that they have enjoyed in the cadet program so far.

“My favourite thing about the Cadet Program is it pushes you outside your comfort zone,” said Flight Corporal Drew. “It encourages you to try new things and I encourage other people to join cadets and try new things.”

The Cadet Program is open to all youth between the ages of 12 to 18 and develops confident, self-sufficient leaders who form lasting friendships and are engaged in their communities while promoting physical fitness, healthy living, and fostering an interest in the activities of the Canadian Armed Forces.
